And yes, its all surrounding a groundhog and it's shadow. Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks or ground squirrels. On February 2nd the ground squirrel peeps out of its burrow. If the groundhog emerges and sees his own shadow, then all is well and this is is a predictor that winter soon end. However, if it happens to be cloudy and the groundhog doesn't see it's shadow, it returns underground. This conversely, is a predictor that winter will extend 6 additional weeks.
